چکیده

In this paper, we address the problem of determining an optimal topology for Bluetooth Wireless Personal Area Networks (BT-WPANs). In BT-WPANs, multiple communication channels are available, thanks to the use of a frequency hopping technique. The way network nodes are grouped to share the same channel, and which nodes are selected to bridge traffic from a channel to another, has a significant impact on the capacity and the throughput of the system, as well as the nodes’ battery lifetime. The determination of an optimal topology is thus extremely important; nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, this problem is tackled here for the first time. Our optimization approach is based on a model derived from constraints that are specific to the BT-WPAN technology, but the level of abstraction of the model is such that it can be related to the more general field of ad hoc networking. By using a min-max formulation, we find the optimal topology that provides full network connectivity, fulfills the traffic requirements and the constraints posed by the system specification, and minimizes the traffic load of the most congested node in the network, or equivalently its energy consumption. Results show that a topology optimized for some traffic requirements is also remarkably robust to changes in the traffic pattern. Due to the problem complexity, the optimal solution is attained in a centralized manner. Although this implies severe limitations, a centralized solution can be applied whenever a network coordinator is elected, and provides a useful term of comparison for any distributed heuristics. Forming Scatternets from Bluetooth Personal Area Networks

There is increasing interest in wireless ad hoc networks built from portable devices equipped with short-range wireless network interfaces. This paper addresses issues related to internetworking such networks to form larger “scatternets.” Within the constraints imposed by the emerging standard Bluetooth link layer and MAC protocol, we describe an efficient online topology formation algorithm, c...

Distributed Topology Construction of Bluetooth Personal Area Networks

In recent years, wireless ad hoc networks have been a growing area of research. While there has been considerable research on the topic of routing in such networks, the topic of topology creation has not received due attention. This is because almost all ad hoc networks to date have been built on top of a single channel, broadcast based wireless media, such as 802.11 or IR LANs. For such networ...

Topology Based Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.15.4 for Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Local Area Networking standard (Wi-Fi) and the WPAN standard (Bluetooth and Zigbee) products utilize the same unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band. Co-existence between such wireless technologies within the same frequency spectrum is crucial to ensure that each wireless technology maintains and provides its desired performance requirements. Wireless Personal Area Networks are formed using tiny ...

Intra-Piconet Polling Algorithms in Bluetooth

Bluetooth is an emerging standard for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs): short range, ad hoc wireless networks [1]. Originally, Bluetooth was envisaged as a wireless cable replacement technique, which is why the basic RF range of Bluetooth devices is only about 10 meters [2]. However, the number of possible uses of Bluetooth have increased to include different networking tasks between com...

A two-phase scatternet formation protocol for Bluetooth wireless personal area networks

Bluetooth is a promising short-range radio technology for wireless personal area networks. There is an interest to expand the coverage of such networks by interconnecting them to form scatternets. Most of the scatternet formation algorithms recently proposed in the literature do not support dynamic topology changes, and the master or bridge nodes in the resulting scatternet may become the traff...
